Mexico, worse than we imagined

Sixth Government Report. Summary: Mexico is going through the worst conditions in its entire history. We are in bad shape, very bad shape. And we are going to get worse.

Because it is not only the President who has acted badly in every aspect. Also, the unknown, silent, and absent members of his cabinet and, of course, the rest of the state leaders, including the increasingly fewer opposition members who remain currently.

The federal legislature is doing the same. Notably the Chamber of Deputies where the uncritical majority of Andrés Manuel López Obrador ‘s Movement crushes with its obedience and ignorance any opinion, position or vote of the opposition minorities. The “majoritarianism” has revived.

The administration of justice is in the worst hands that the so-called 4T could find. A prosecutor who threw away the autonomy he had achieved and who has the FGR as his private office where he only handles his personal affairs… and those who order him and how they order him from the National Palace,

And what can we say about the Judiciary! AMLO and Claudia Sheinbaum also want it submissive, prostrate. The ministers, magistrates and judges are threatened by the scolding and invectives of the clown who stars in the palace matinees, especially when their rulings are averse to what the “leader” wants to be carried out in his twisted imagination. And however, he wants it to be carried out. That is why he wants to “reform” them. In his own way. With his feet.

Municipal and state police forces are on the verge of disappearing due to a lack of resources and adequate training. But also due to the overwhelming presence of soldiers and marines who, also without training, have been enabled as gendarmes of a militarized National Guard. And, of course, with the same practices of those they are gradually replacing: “bribes,” extortion, alliances with organized criminals in cartels and even with occasional criminals.

That is why barbarism has also taken hold throughout the national territory.

Do you want us to talk about the spoils that the Tolucopachucracia left behind from the political parties, after their leaders signed the failed –as usual– Pact for Mexico and their support for the so-called “structural reforms”? Or how AMLO almost made them disappear in 2024? Better not.

The real Government Report should be that we are doing badly, very badly.

Health, neglected and its institutions, looted.

Education is at the same level as it was a century ago when most of the population was illiterate or only reached the fourth grade of primary school. Today, these majorities remain mired in functional illiteracy: they do not understand what they read, if they even read or know how to read, and they write with all the spelling mistakes imaginable. We’d better not talk about arithmetic, history, civics, and geography.

Corruption is widespread in society

But it is not only those at the top who are wrong. Also, what has been called “civil society”.

Businessmen and bankers, installed in voracity and expatriating their capital. The unions, also as always, allied with capital and against those who rent out their skills and labor force.

Civil organizations are at odds with each other and are unable to find common ground.

In these worse conditions that the country is going through, even professional football is doing badly. It has disillusioned its fans, fed up with seeing them lose to mediocre teams, while the owners of the clubs take their show abroad so that it will pay off in dollars.

And baseball, the official sport of the 4T, is receiving substantial amounts of money from our empty pockets without this resulting in greater acceptance and expansion of its supporters or in better events.

Those who prepare to compete in international competitions continually complain about the plundering that they receive from the associations and federations affiliated with CONADE because the resources allocated to them are plundered.

We are not prepared to receive international tourists either. There is improvisation and mistreatment towards visitors who dare to come to what they rightly consider “Apache land”, lawless and full of violence.

National cinema? Theatre? Circuses? Bloodless. Without resources. Without spectators in the face of the push from Hollywood and now, of course, from Netflix and other streaming platforms .

And journalism is in the same terrible situation. It is also a victim of the mediocrity of many of those of us who carry out the profession of informing and/or expressing opinions. The lack of preparation is almost universal. Conformism in the face of the bulletin is daily, as is the pernicious “declarationitis.” And to the low salaries and the growing contempt of chairos and amlovers, add what causes it: the threats uttered by the one born in Tepetitán when his truths are sung to him. That is why there are many colleagues murdered and many more threatened.

The worst thing is that the majority is co-opted. The gifts that, they are told, they receive thanks to the generosity of the President of the Republic keep them in conformity and, yes, ready to respond to the call of AMLO’s leaders so that “carried”, they fill auditoriums, public squares, and of course vote for whoever they are told because they no longer have the will… or dignity.

Sixth Government Report: Mexico is doing badly. Very badly.

“President’s Day” has resurfaced

There are no longer parades in open cars along the central avenues of the capital of the Republic with long lines of people “brought in” by the PRI.

Nor were small pieces of green, white, and red tissue paper thrown in the path of the procession, which was surrounded by motorcyclists.

Now the Zócalo of CDMX, full of Morena’s “carried-in” people, revived “President’s Day.”

The government report, that annual ritual, is nothing more than one of the many masks that Mexican presidentialism has. A ritual that lacks meaning. It is exhausted. It contributes nothing significant to political life.

The fact that the President does not attend the legislative chamber does not solve the problem of questioning his actions in different areas of his administration, because he remains the person primarily responsible for government policies.

The weight of the political actors has not changed, as the country is once again under the domination of a single party without a plurality of political options. The report and all legislative activities exclude the opposition. Today, this opposition has lost ground and its presence is diminished: we once again have a Congress with an overwhelming majority of a single party. The correlation of forces no longer exists.

The umpteenth report — the sixth that is formal — presented this September 1 by Andrés Manuel López Obrador has not been, like all the previous ones, an effective and transparent accountability.

It was a long spot. Like all those that, under the pretext of delivering the report, the Presidency of the Republic broadcasts incessantly about the works carried out by the Executive during its administration.

At all hours and for several days, spots are broadcast about the achievements in the different areas of government.

Under these conditions, the report became a monologue by the Executive. If it was previously in Congress, now it is in the media. There is no one to question it, to debate it. The opposition political parties have no way of directly letting the President know their position.

“Presidents Day” has been reborn!

Clues

AMLO received adulation from those attending the accountability ceremony (sic) at the Zócalo. The most flattering, of course, was Claudia Sheinbaum who posted fragments of the speech she gave when she received the symbolic baton of command: “… You, dear president, are an ethical and moral reference that has taught us not to fall in the face of any adversity, not to kneel before the power of money, to trust in the people and their dignity, because when there is a revolution of consciences and a people is empowered and recognizes its strength and its history, there is nothing that can stop it. Know, dear president, that you will always have our support, and we will take care of your great legacy and know that the end of your government will be spectacular, because once again with the people of Mexico, we will be making history.” * * * My recognition to you who read this far. As always, I wish you good thanks and many, many days!
