Another President who doesn’t give a damn about the law

The great challenge we face today is to decipher who the authentic Claudia Sheinbaum is.

Is she the conciliator who, before businessmen from Mexico and the United States, guaranteed that the rule of law would be respected and that the reform that distorts the judiciary would not harm their interests?

Or is it the one who, last Friday, in an act of authoritarian rebellion, proudly showed her disregard for a judicial ruling and arrogantly threatened the judge who ordered her to “remove” the publication of this judicial reform from the Official Gazette of the Federation?

Is she or, in her style, a copy of AMLO?

I’ll venture a hypothesis: It’s her.

Sheinbaum is more radical and, of course, more structured than her predecessor…

…who now appears to have been a puppet of Sheinbaum!

Sophists or hypocrites?

A super powerful and unassailable head of the Executive, Head of State and Government, Commander of the Armed Forces who does not respect the law, without knowing the limits of constitutional contempt, without having checks and balances that help her, at least, to float for the good of the country.

Because saying one thing and doing the opposite is part of the tradition of “Mexican style” politicians.

You can call them sophists, hypocrites or even sufferers of cognitive dissonance, but the fact is that, in this case that affects all Mexicans, the President of the Republic acted like La Chimoltrufia in less than three days.

Nothing new. Disregard for the judges’ orders is already a constant in the actions of López Obrador’s followers. In a paradox, the very same Doctor of Law, Ricardo Monreal, has urged the INE, for example, to disregard judicial rulings that would slow down the holding of elections for ministers, magistrates and judges and even postpone them until after June 2025.

Regarding the president of the Senate’s board of directors, Gerardo Fernández Noroña , it is understood when he said that “there is no power on Earth that can stop” the legislative monstrosity that puts an end to the separation of powers and threatens the rule of law.

Are you so sure that you have forgotten that the then head of the defunct DDF, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was brought before the court to remove his immunity and put him in jail for disobeying a judge’s order?

It will not happen now, of course, because Morena and its followers from the PT and the Green Party obtained a spurious majority that was given to them by the administrative and jurisdictional bodies in electoral matters.

“Whatever happened, whatever happened” they won… just like that one.

Furthermore, and if the above were not enough, because we already know that the four-handed gang “can’t be told the story that the law is the law.”

It scares the markets

This recent decision by President Sheinbaum and her advisors Ernestina Godoy and Arturo Zaldívar is an affront and confirms that we are already in the middle of a constitutional crisis.

The latter, Godoy and Zaldívar –very controversial due to their backgrounds– should know that, in the event of disagreement with a judicial decision, the correct thing to do is to file the corresponding appeals and means of defense, instead of disobeying a court order.

Why did they not appeal the suspension of the judicial reform before a collegiate court, allowing this body to determine whether the judge acted within her legal powers?

Why did Sheinbaum threaten the judge?

Why did the President allow this ugly face of repression and authoritarianism to show itself, just a couple of days after having shown the pretty face of respect for the law to the investors gathered at the National Palace?

These discrepancies frighten the already fearful — and rightly so — financial markets, which take care of the money of their investor clients, many of them pension funds under their care.

There is a conflict of powers, because one of the three has fallen into contempt, or worse still, into prevarication.

The Federal Executive Branch showed its true colors.

She doesn’t know any general principle of law that is accepted even by the snobbiest people in the business. Of course, as X’s post said a few days ago, she doesn’t know anything about law — her advisors only know about politics — because she is an expert in keeping “wood stoves” from emitting smoke into the air.

Shows two faces

“In any democratic country that safeguards the rule of law, objections to judicial decisions are fought by exhausting all means of appeal and not by threatening to file complaints against the issuer,” said the National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (JUFED) in a statement, after warning that Claudia Sheinbaum’s refusal to comply with the suspension of the reform to the Judicial Branch presents a “serious risk” to the protection of the fundamental rights of all Mexicans.

Is this the Claudia Sheinbaum who will lead the country for the next six years?

A people or society that also does not abide by the decisions and rulings of judges, following the (bad) example of its President?

With which of his two faces will he rule us?

Conciliatory? Authoritarian?

Already invested with that great power that the Presidency of Mexico gives, we have not deciphered who is the true holder of the Federal Executive Power.

Clues

Nancy Juárez Salas, the judge who is seeking to sentence Claudia Sheinbaum to up to 9 years in prison for having fallen into contempt, reacted to the lawsuit that the Mexican government will file against her before the Judicial Council and was not daunted. And in response she announced that she will go to the Public Prosecutor’s Office to file the corresponding complaint. * * * That’s all for today. I acknowledge that you have read this far and, as always, I wish you good thanks and many, many days!
