AMLO and his seventh year itch

Searching for solutions in inaccessible places is a constant in human nature. This happens especially when the people around the leader are influenced by tangential visions, ignorance or personal interests.

In politics, it is common for the inner circles of decision-making to be filled with useless and convenient people, which prevents good intentions and programs from working.

The circle surrounding Claudia Sheinbaum , which was imposed on her by López Obrador, is no exception. “She must plow with those oxen.”

The first hundred days of his government, on January 12, have been marked by the exact fulfillment of the orders that AMLO issued since February 5, which are nothing more than the unconstitutional extension of the mandate of the only resident of “La Chingada.”

For Sheinbaum to assume power is still a challenge.

His head of state is apparent, only a virtual reality would say quantum logic.

It is not enough that a country holds elections every six years to conclude that it is a democracy, if those who are supposed to leave remain in power. Because apart from the fact that the dominance of the de facto and informal ones persists, it is a fact that we almost always elect the worst.

Here’s an anecdote: A few days after Vicente Fox arrived at Los Pinos, a fifty-something teacher from the Turin school, Michelangelo Bovero , visiting Mexico, asked himself: “What if the voters realize that they elected an incompetent, a profiteer, or even a criminal, or more modestly, an incapable person?…

“… If they don’t have procedures in Mexico to correct what they just did, is that a great virtue of political stability?” asked Professor Bovero in a university classroom in Acatlán. He recommended that we pay attention to what was always happening in his country.

Italy is always at the forefront of this, he said. We are a real political laboratory that is often at the forefront. Here are a few examples, he explained:

“At the beginning of the 20th century we produced fascism. Before the end of the millennium, as a grotesque prefiguration of the Apocalypse, we invented a type of plutocratic — demagogic — authoritarian government, based mainly on the idiotization of the great masses of voters achieved by television…

… “The first product, fascism, was successful. The second, the degenerate political model that I have dubbed kakistocracy, the government of the worst, towards which so-called real democracies like Mexico are heading, is a real nightmare.”

Bovero was obviously referring to the long period of Silvio Berlusconi , the political entrepreneur manufactured from television, money and collective idiocy. A long night that was soon overtaken by the Italian boot. It seems incredible that every time someone tries to get their hands on the State, reforming it, they end up constitutionalizing authoritarianism, not democratizing countries.

And yes, the visionary of the future from Turin had outlined what was coming: the enthronement in Mexico of Enrique Peña Nieto , a net product of the Televisa forums. A little sword of Damocles hanging over our heads. Until the threat became a reality with the country in the hands of the impostors. The impostors also push in that direction: kakistocracy.

Sheinbaum and AMLO’s permanence

On the other side of that spectrum appears a riddle that, wherever you look at it, represents an even greater threat: Claudia Sheinbaum, as the absolute security of the permanence of the strange, the despicable at the helm of a State that has already been squeezed to the maximum by the chiquilicuatres or inexperienced and unimportant men.

Thus, the political equation proposed by Bovero exactly 25 years ago is taking on an unusual relevance. Mexico is facing two will-o’-the-wisps, driven by the same finger by a politician from the humid tropics who no longer knows how many lies to tell through his puppet, while he dedicates himself to morbidly concentrating power.

Sheinbaum, for her part, no longer knows how many lies to tell so that we citizens become engrossed in the trivial and never discover what is hidden in this way of distracting the respectable, while like a charlatan she continues to decide under which shell she will deposit the ball. The bewildered passers-by must continue buying Fosfovitacal or, at the very least, the soap of the grateful dog.

That 25 years after Bovero’s warning we elected an incompetent, worse than the one in Guanajuato, there is not a single doubt. That this election has caused a watershed where the sinister mentality of totalitarianism and dictatorship can appear through any crack, there is also no doubt. That it may have been the last laugh of the shambling of this system, we are close to confirming it.

Because the so-called struggle for the democratic transition in Mexico became our sweet drug. A common place for excesses, petulance and fuss of theorists of small parties now in opposition who took the procedure to profit even more from the honey of the State. They dedicated themselves to proposing electoral reforms that never led to a single port.

With the never-realized democratic transition, many fathers of the country proclaimed themselves to be those who reveled and choked in search of the photo, the stipends, the prebends and the gastronomic and bacchic pleasures that the transitional government in power offered for free, in exchange for not touching it even with a burp.

The opportunity to change the balance of power, establish controls on authoritarian power, curb irresponsible actions and put above all else the State policies required for the governability that is always needed was missed. It was all a mess.

36 million votes. His or hers?

Today, society, cornered by delusional fascism, has too many pending issues in terms of security, education, employment, productivity and competition, health, food and all the minimum levels of well-being that the population demands in order to live in an educational system. The investiture has been affected. The position and its respectability have been demolished.

The passage through La Silla of the last four, opportunists, thieves and frauds, depending on which bag they wear best, has swept away any possibility of finding the State reform that best suits us. The important thing today is to know that there is no longer a State as it was known until very recently.

What remains is a three-ring populist circus for another impostor to show up to see if she can do the contortions that the 36 million votes of the official tambourine can be for AMLO or Sheinbaum. The other twenty-five million disappointed and angry people are on another matter: it is too difficult to survive in this country. It seems that there is no spirit left to start from scratch.

The presidential system is already destroyed

The government of the worst, in one six-year term and almost 100 days, managed to make power lose its magic, its aura.

His infallibility is no longer the same.

The supreme facilitator of the impossible, the last on the negotiation ladder, no longer exists.

The presidential system is destroyed. That’s as far as it goes.

The farcical concert of the charlatans ended up with the audience’s eardrums being shattered.

It remains to be seen whether beneath the distracting “morning press conferences for the people” there are hidden bigger business deals for the regime, like those that the formal President tried to minimize, in vain, a few days ago.

This would be the final straw that is needed. And everything indicates that this is the way to go.

That, plus the savage justice meted out by drug lords and hitmen on the roads, in the towns and on the city sidewalks is more than enough.

It’s the law of the jungle and money.

Who wants more?
